This image shows President Emeritus James D. Rankin reading an invocation at the fall convocation ceremony held in Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, in November 1957 at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). Rankin stands at the podium on a stage, and the Board of Trustees stands immediately behind him, in front of the college choir. At the base of the stage is the college band, and the audience stands in the foreground, bowing their heads. The convocation ceremony included speaker Paul A. Johnston, director of the Department of Administration of North Carolina, and guest J. Kemp Doughton, speaker of the House of Representatives in the North Carolina General Assembly, who presented a tribute to the late Blanford Barnard Dougherty. There were also performances by the college band and college choir, and an invocation read by President Emeritus J. D. Rankin. The Appalachian State Board of Trustees took an oath of office administered by Boone Mayor Gordon H. Winkler.
