Title

Reading Center, 1957, photo 3

Description

This image shows two boys reading books in a device known as a controlled reader, aided by Uberto Price, director of Reading Services, in the Reading Center at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). The device allowed a metal sheet to be pulled down a page to allow the dyslexic users to focus on lines. A third boy sits in a chair reading against the wall. Books line the back wall on bookshelves, with two posters on recreation preferences and a graph on the opposite wall. The Reading Center provided diagnostic and remedial services for Appalachian students and the region in general. It also served as a laboratory for students in the teacher preparation program.
