This image shows Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979), behind a podium, as two professors stand ready to place the doctoral hood on Arthel "Doc" Watson, second from the right, and Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts Nicholas Erneston can be seen on the right. Watson was the recipient of a Doctor of Folk Arts degree during the commencement ceremony at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in May 1973. Commencement was held in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968.Standing between Chancellor Wey and Watson is Mr. Rogers Whitener, Professor of English. Seated between Watson and Dean Erneston is Dr. William C. Strickland, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
