This image shows musicians Merle and Doc Watson rehearsing before their performance at the commencement ceremony in May 1973 at Appalachian State University (1967-current). Doc Watson plays a guitar while sitting on a bench, while Merle Watson stands, talking to a man in academic dress. Arthel "Doc" Watson received a Doctor of Folk Arts degree during the commencement ceremony. Commencement was held in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. Mr. Roger Whitener, Professor of English, can be seen pictured in the graduation gown.
