Description
This image shows a Dwight Quinn speaking at commencement ceremonies at Appalachian State University (1967-current) after receiving an honorary doctorate in law in May 1978. Commencement was held at the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. Other commencement speakers can be seen sitting in the background, and the wall reads, "[V]MI," with a painting of their kangaroo mascot, "Citadel," with a painting of their bulldog mascot, "Marshall," with a painting of a bull's head over an outline of West Virginia, and a painting of Yosef, Appalachian State's mascot. Seated on the right is Dr. William C. Strickland, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Seated next to him is Chancellor John E. Thomas. Quinn was a legislator and chairman of the Appalachian State Board of Trustees. He helped the School obtain university status in 1967.
