Commencement, 1977, honorary doctorate

This image shows the awarding of an honorary doctorate degree during the May 1977 commencement ceremony in the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, at Appalachian State University (1969-current). Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) hands a framed doctorate to the honoree. Other commencement speakers are visible seated in the background, and the wall includes two "no smoking" signs, a painting of Yosef, the Appalachian State mascot, and a 1921 Southern Conference logo. Seated on the far right and partially obscured is Dr. Richard Sorensen, Dean of the College of Business. Next to him is Dr. William C. Strickland, dean of the College of Arts and Science. Seated on the left is Dr. John E. Thomas.
