Title

Convocation, 1989, Harry Reasoner

Description

This image shows former ABC Evening News anchor Harry Reasoner speaking at the convocation ceremony in 1989 at Appalachian State University (1967-current), celebrating the University's 90 year anniversary since the founding of Watauga Academy (1899-1903). Watauga Academy was the first manifestation of Appalachian State. It became a state-sponsored institution in 1903 and was renamed Appalachian Training School (1903-1925). From 1925 to 1929, it was Appalachian State Normal School, became a teachers college in 1929, and was renamed Appalachian State Teachers College. It became a full University in 1967, and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1972. This image shows a speaker behind a podium, addressed an audience visible in the foreground. The banner over the stage reads, "Happy 90th Appalachian."
