Standing behind the podium is Mr. Sam Ervin who served as a U.S. Senator from North Carolina from 1954 to 1974. The seventy-fifth anniversary of Appalachian State University (1967-current) was celebrated in 1978, commemorating the anniversary of the University becoming a state-sponsored institution with a focus in teacher training in 1903, when Watauga Academy (1899-1903) became Appalachian Training School (1903-1925).
