Title

Health Services, registration

Description

A student gets a shot from one of the registered nurses working at Student Health Services at Appalachian State University (1967-current). One of the last steps in the registration process was to ensure all students had the proper vaccinations before attending classes, and students who needed them were given shots at registration. The Health Services Department started in 1949 with the hiring of staff nurse Mary S. Shook (1949-1983). By 1968, Health Services was located in Hagaman Hall, built 1952, and included a full-time physician, six registered nurses, and offered x-rays, treatment minor injuries and illnesses, and inpatient care, including two wards of six beds each for males and females. It moved to the Annas Student Services Building in 1981.
