Title

Health Services, medical staff

Description

This image shows Dr. Evan Ashby, director of Health Services since 1972, and two nurses on the medical staff in the Health Services Department at Appalachian State University (1967-current). The woman on the right is Mrs. Nina Martin. Each of the three staff members are holding needles to a patient's arm. Mary S. Shook (left) was a registered nurse for the University since 1949 and retired in 1983. She provided care for minor injuries and illnesses before the University had a formal Health Services department. In 1968, Health Services was located in Hagaman Hall, built 1952, and was expanded to include a full-time physician, six registered nurses, and offer x-rays, treatment minor injuries and illnesses, and inpatient care, including two wards of six beds each for males and females. It moved to the Annas Student Services Building in 1981.
