Description
This image shows the Computer Center at Appalachian State University (1967-current), circa 1970. The Center began in 1968 and was primarily used as a laboratory for the computer science courses, and for aiding University administrative offices. This image shows an employee loading a disk pack into a direct access storage subsystem. By 1974, Appalachian State was operating both an IBM 1130, introduced 1965, and a UNIVAC 9400, introduced 1969. Both IBM-compatible systems included disk drive units using a disk pack, a collection of platters or "heads" for storing data, with a maximum capacity of 7.2 megabytes. It was mounted on a common actuator which would read or write information to the disks. By 1976, they were operating UNIVAC Series 70/46 and 90/60 computers.
