This image shows two members of the freshman swim class at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in 1956. Sitting on the right is 1956 Homecoming queen Carol Jean Preslar. Swim classes were held in the Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955. Appalachian State offered courses for physical education majors in beginners and advanced swimming, but also offered recreational classes for freshmen and sophomore non-majors.
