Description
This image shows the Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) Board of Trustees, seated on a stage, on June 14, 1955. The Board of Trustees have been a governing body of the College since it became a state-sponsored institution in 1903. The Board of Trustees was formed of members representing regional areas of Western North Carolina and managed Appalachian policies, finances, and development until 1971, when it became part of the University of North Carolina system. It now oversees Appalachian under the University System's Board of Governors. In addition to the president of Appalachian, the 1955 Board included William J. Conrad, chairman, from Winston-Salem, Eunice Moose of Taylorsville, Fred N. Colvard of Jefferson, J. R. Hix of North Wilkesboro, L. A. Dysart of Lenoir, B. C. Brock of Mocksville, Mrs. Harry B. Caldwell of Greensboro, S. P. Jones of Statesville, and W. W. Mast of Valle Crucis.
