Title

Commencement, August 1954, photo 1

Description

This image shows the commencement of the summer class on August 19, 1954. They are seen seated on chairs on College Field, located just south of the Administration Building, built 1924. Students can be seen sitting on top of the press box, while one stands on the bleachers. Guests sit to the extreme right of the image. The top of the Arts and Crafts, or Industrial Arts, Building, built 1917, can be seen behind the bleachers. By 1948, the Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) summer school was composed of regular students as well as graduate students working towards a master's degree. Teachers already in the workforce would attend the summer school as it did not interfere with the regular school year. There were 165 graduate degrees conferred in the summer of 1954.
