This image shows Appalachian president and co-founder Dr. Blanford Barnard Dougherty sitting on a couch next John Howell, being presented with a North Carolina Education Association check for $992.00, to aid the college endowment fund at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in January 1955. John Howell was principal of Appalachian Elementary School and head of the fund raising project. Because Appalachian consistently received less money that most other schools in the state, Blanford Barnard Dougherty was constantly campaigning for funds from the state and other sources. Thanks to donations, by 1954 they had enough money accumulated in the endowment fund to begin offering the school's first scholarships. In 1954-55, the tuition for an in-state student was $22.50, while out-of-state tuition was $43.50, plus additional student fees amounting to $10.00. The NCEA fund would provide tuition assistance for up to 44 in-state, or 22 out-of-state, students.
