Description

This image shows the dedication of the Romy Story Monument on October 24, 1953 at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). The monument was placed at the edge of College Field, just south of the second Administration Building, built 1924, visible in the background. Image shows a group of attendees posing in front of the fence lining the football field. It includes ASTC professor D. J. Whitener, head of social studies department, standing on right, I. G. Greer, former professor of history at Appalachian from 1910-1932, fourth from the right, and Blanford Barnard Dougherty, Appalachian president from 1903-1955, standing on left. The group also included teammates of Romy Story, a former Watauga Academy (1899-1903) and Appalachian Training School (1903-1925) student, and John W. Umstead, Jr., of the University of North Carolina. The monument was located approximately where the Rankin Science Complex stands, built 1963-2003.
