This image shows Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) student Elizabeth Brown (with hat) with other students washing with water in a barrel from a newly drilled well, behind Watauga County Hospital, built 1932 and opened 1938. The image was taken in the fall of 1939 by Gene Wyke, publicity director for Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). Elizabeth Brown was the daughter of Clara Bartlett Dougherty, daughter of School co-founder Dauphin Disco Dougherty, and O. L. Brown.
