Description

Appalachian Training School (1903-1925) 1911 class photo. Early school students were often in the preparatory or high school courses taught for those only at the seventh or eighth grade levels. The school later began operating a Demonstration Elementary School to provide teacher training with Watauga County students. Clara Bartlett Dougherty, eldest daughter of Dauphin Disco and Lillie Shull Dougherty, can be seen on the back row, second from the right. The students are standing in front of the first Administration Building, built 1905.
