Description

This image is of the Domestic Science kitchen in Watauga Academy, built 1899. A stove can be seen in the back left, and flour tins are spread along the table for student use. The blackboard includes two recipes, drop biscuits and cocoa. It reads, "Drop Biscuits, Ingredients: 1c flour, 2 t BP, 1/2 t salt, 2 tb lard. 1/2 c milk or water (1/4 t soda to 1/2 c sour milk). Method: Mix and sift dry ingredients. Blend in lard. Mix with liquid. Drop in greased muffin tins and bake in hot oven." "Cocoa, Ingredients: 1 t cocoa, 2 t sugar, 1/2 c milk, 1/2 c water. Method: Heat milk and water in double boiler. Mix cocoa and sugar and a little warm liquid. Then add to other liquid."
