Associate Professor Emerita of Home Economics Celia Sue Graham Roten (November 12, 1935-) was born in Lansing, North Carolina. She attended Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk, North Carolina, from 1955 to 1956 and received a B.S. degree in home economics from Appalachian State University in 1959. She received an M.S. degree in clothing and textiles from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (1966) and continued her studies at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1972) and Appalachian State University (1974). Prior to coming to Appalachian State University, Roten taught home economics in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, for the Watauga County Board of Education (1959-1960) and in Sparta, North Carolina, for the Alleghany County Board of Education (1961-1965). She was appointed to the faculty of Appalachian State in 1966. Roten was professionally affiliated with several organizations, including the American Home Economics Association, the North Carolina Home Economics Association, the Association of College Professors of Textiles and Clothing, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and the National Education Association. She was instrumental in the development of audiovisual aids for clothing classes; she also participated in off-campus scholarly assignments, was on curriculum committees, and was a club advisor. Professor Roten retired from Appalachian State in June 1992. She was awarded the status of associate professor emerita in July 1992. Roten is married to Carl F. Roten and they reside in the Boone, North Carolina area. They have two children, Cara (July 18, I960-) and Ivan (March 12, 1964-). Cara is a doctor of veterinary medicine and operates the Animal Medical Center in Boone. Ivan, a professor in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State, received his B.S. degree from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, his M.B.A. degree from Appalachian State, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He is married to the former Dana Frye, who received her master's from the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State.
