Biographical Text
Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction Ben Gess Bosworth, Jr. (July 6, 1926-) was born in Lexington, Kentucky. He attended Emory and Henry College, Emory, Virginia (1944-45), and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville (1945-48), where he earned a B.S. Ed, degree (1948) and an M.A. degree in education administration (1949). He earned an Ed.D. degree in administration and supervision from the University of Virginia in 1960. Bosworth served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He taught mathematics and science in the Albemarle County schools in Charlottesville, Virginia, from 1949 to 1950, serving afterward in the United States Marine Corps (1950-52). Returning to Virginia, he taught and coached in the Charlottesville city schools (1953-54), served as the elementary school principal in Apple Grove School, Louisa, Virginia (1954-56), and was an assistant superintendent in the Hampton city schools (Virginia) from 1957 to 1960. In 1960, he was appointed to the faculty of Appalachian State University (then Appalachian State Teachers' College) and was tenured in 1965. Dr. Bosworth's professional affiliations included the National Education Association, the North Carolina Education Association, the Association for Student Teaching, and the Association for Higher Education. He has published several articles, including "Student Teaching-A Two-Way Street" (Student Teaching Topics, 1964); "The 1961-62 Student Teaching Program at ASTC and Its Relationship to Cooperating School Districts" (Faculty Publications, 1964); "Are You Ready for Freddy" (North Carolina Education, 1966); "Inducting Your Student Teacher Into a Full Load" (Student Teaching Topics, 1967); "Preparing for the Arrival of Your Student Teacher" (Student Teaching Topics, 1967); and "Evaluating Your Student Teacher" (North Carolina Education, 1969). In June 1993 Bosworth retired from Appalachian State University. He was awarded the rank of professor emeritus in September 1993. Dr. Bosworth, and his late wife, Kathryn Ferguson Bosworth, had two daughters, Kathryn Gail (October 28, 1953-) and Elizabeth Gess (March 26, 1958-), three grandchildren, Sarah, Jamie, and Katie, and two step-grandsons, Justin and Jeremy.
