Professor Emeritus of Geography Julian Clifton Yoder (May 29,1910 -), retired college professor and administrator, was born in Danville, Virginia (Pittsylvania County), the son of Robert E. and HagerHunt Yoder. He graduated from Union High School, Vale, North Carolina in 1928. He received his undergraduate education at Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) earning a B.S. in mathematics and science in 1933. He earned his M.A. at George Peabody College (now a part of Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, Tennessee in 1938, and his Ph.D. degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1949. He also was a student in a National Science Institute in Astronomy at Eau Claire, Wisconsin, during the summer of 1953. Yoder began his career at Appalachian State University in September, 1933, soon after graduating from the institution, and retired in 1974. He was called back to teach part-time during the spring quarter of 1975. During his years with the University, Yoder taught physical, economic, historical, and political geography as well as United States history. He served as chairman of the Social Sciences Department and, later, as chairman of the Geography and Geology Department. During his years at the University Yoder served on numerous committees and coun­cils and contributed to the research in his field with such articles as: "The Economic Geography of Soybean Production." "The Economic Geography of Selected Crops in the Mountain Counties of North Carolina" "Economic History of Selected Activities in Moun­tain Counties of North Carolina." "Latitude, Sunrays, and a Ten-Inch Protractor." Dr. Yoder also held professional posi­tions with East Carolina University (sum­mer, 1938); Glenville State College, Glenville, West Virginia, (summer, 1949); New York University, Oswego Division (1952); and, was a teaching fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1946-47). He was professionally affiliated with Asso­ciation of American Geographers, American Geographical Society, National Council for Geographic Education, North Carolina Edu­cation Association, and National Geographic Society.
