Associate Professor Emeritus of English Laurie Tully Reed (September 28, 1916 -), retired college professor, was born in Savannah, Georgia. Reed spent several years in the hotel business in New York, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina prior to entering the U.S. Army in 1942. While serving in the Army during World War II in Europe and Asia, he attained the rank of master sergeant of infantry operations. After being discharged, he was employed with the Department of Commerce in Washington from 1946 until 1948. Reed attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., during 1947-48. In 1948 he entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from where he earned an A.B. degree in English in 1950. He also was graduated with his M.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951.From 1955 until 1960 he pursued doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During this time he was a part-time instructor in the English Department. While receiving his education, Reed was also employed as a technician assistant with the American Viscose Corporation in Fredericksburg, Virginia and as an instructor at the Blue Ridge School for Boys in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Reed served as associate professor and acting chairman of the department of English at Elon College, North Carolina, from 1960 until 1966. In the fall of 1966, he accepted the position of an assistant professor of English Source: Appalachian State University files. at Appalachian State University. Reed and his wife, Frances, are blessed with four children: Josephine Wiley, Katherine Thompson, Susan Frances, and Laurie Tully Reed, III. His professional affiliations included memberships in the American Association of University Professors, Southeastern Renaissance Conference, and South Atlantic Modern Language Association. Professor Reed retired from Appalachian on June 30, 1987 after serving the institution for 21 years. He received faculty emeritus status by action of the Board of Trustees on September 4, 1987. In retirement, Tully and Frances Reed reside near Boone. - Dr. Richard D. Howe
