Professor Emeritus of Reading Uberto Price (August 26, 1918 -), retired college professor and administrator, was born in Edmondton, Kentucky the son of Florence Cassady and Dan H. Price (both deceased). Price graduated from Edmondton High School in 1936. Price is married to Mary Nichols Price, the daughter of Lelie C. and lone Williams Nichols. The Prices have one daughter, Linda Kaye Price (July 30, 1950 -) who has two children by her late husband, Tom Fin-cannon: Leslie Gentry (February 2,1978 - in Taylorsville, North Carolina) and Thomas David (April 30, 1980 - in Taylorsville, North Carolina). Linda Kaye married James Edward Sitton from South Carolina on February 14,1982. In 1938 Price received his A.A. degree from Campbellsville College, Kentucky. He then attended Eastern Kentucky State University where he received his B.S. degree in elementary education, English and social studies in 1942. While working on his degree, Price also attended Western Kentucky State University and Morehead State Teachers College for several semesters during the years 1940 and 1941. During this time Price also taught elementary and secondary school and served as principal in Metcalf County, Kentucky. After receiving his B.S. degree, Price began work on his M.A. degree in curriculum, supervision and administration at Western Kentucky State University during the summers of 1943-46. Price received his M.A. degree in 1946 and then served as a visiting faculty member at Pembroke State University in North Carolina and Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky during the 1946-47 academic year. During this time he also studied at George Peabody College (now a part of Vanderbilt University). In 1947 Price became a faculty member at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa where he taught for four years. He then taught at State University of New York in Plattsburgh from 1951-55. Price came to Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in 1955 as an assistant professor in the Department of Education and as Director of Reading Services. Price was promoted to professor during his first five years on the faculty and has also served as chairman of the Department of Reading. He served on the following councils/committees: Faculty Senate; Graduate Council; chairman, Reading Proficiency Committee; Academic Policies and Procedures Committee; chairman, Graduate Advisory Committee for Students Specializing in Reading; Research and Publications; Reorganization of the College of Education; Committee on Internships; Deans Advisory Committee; Deans Administrative Council; and University Council on Teacher Education. During his tenure at ASU Price helped set up and teach summer reading programs for public school teachers in North Carolina and South Carolina. He was consultant and featured speaker at many colleges and conferences throughout the United States for more than 20 years and has been acclaimed as "Mr. Reading" for his expertise and knowledge in the field. He has been a visiting faculty member at: University of Kentucky, Lexington; University of Miami, Florida; Ouachita College, Arkadelphia, Arkansas; and, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He also took a leave of absence as a visiting faculty and consultant in reading for the Educational Clinic at Southeastern Louisiana College, Hammond, Louisiana. His publications include: "They Read and Like It," in NCEA Journal, 1956. "A Cooperative Reading Program," in College Publications, 1959. "Criteria for Establishing and Evaluating a Reading Program," in College Reading Association, 1963. "An All-Freshman Reading Program," in Journal of Reading, 1964. "Preparation of Junior College Reading Teachers," in International Reading Association, 1967. Price served as president of the College Reading Association in 1970 and has held membership in the National and State Education Associations, American Association of University Professors, National Society for the Study of Education, International Reading Association, National Reading Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Epsilon Sigma, North Carolina College Reading Teachers, Editorial Board of the Journal of Reading Improvement, and the North Carolina Council of the International Reading Association. Price received the Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1974 and was the First recipient of the College Reading Association Award for Outstanding Professional Service in 1971. Professor Uberto Price retired from his position at ASU in 1982 and was granted emeritus status by the board of trustees in 1983. In his retirement Price has had one-man shows of his sketches--pen and ink-of rural, rustic scenes; and, mountains and flowers. He is "taking up" gardening but continues to keep up with his professional reading, and continues his interest in folklore.
