Description
This image shows President William H. Plemmons at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), standing by a Pilot truck in the 1960s. Lackey graduated from ASTC in 1937 and served on the Board of Trustees from 1957 to 1973. He also headed the Alumni Association's Heartline Fund to raise money for the construction of Conrad Stadium, built 1962, at Appalachian State. He was one of the founders of the Pilot Freight Carriers, Inc, in Winston-Salem, NC. The Board of Trustees have been a governing body of the College since it became a state-sponsored institution in 1903. The Board of Trustees was formed of members representing regional areas of Western North Carolina and managed Appalachian policies, finances, and development until 1971, when it became part of the University of North Carolina system. It now oversees Appalachian State under the University System's Board of Governors.
