Description

This image shows Eric DeGroat, assistant professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967), instructing a student during a swimming class in October 1960. Swim classes were held in the Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955. Appalachian State offered courses for physical education majors in beginners and advanced swimming, but also offered recreational classes for freshmen and sophomore non-majors. DeGroat began teaching at Appalachian State in 1959 and also served as coach for swimming, soccer, and track.
