Bookstore, first, snack bar, 1961

Description

This image shows a group of people sitting around a table by the vending machines in the snack bar of the College Bookstore, built 1935, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1960s. In the back right, partially obscured by two other men, is Bob Light who at different times was the head basketball coach and the head tennis coach for the university. Vending machines can be seen in the background. The bookstore operated in an old brick building at the corner of Locust St. and College Ave. from 1934 until 1967, when it was demolished to make way for the construction of a newer, larger University Bookstore, finished 1969. In addition to book sales and rentals, the store offered Appalachian State merchandise, office and school supplies, a soda fountain, and a snack bar. This image appears in the 1962 Rhododendron (p. 27).
