This image shows a man handing a small cup to a woman as an award for placing in a jogging contest at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the late 1960s. The man smoking a pipe is Dr. Carl Messere. Standing next to him, and behind the man presenting the cup, is President William Plemmons. Next to President Plemmons is Dr. Wiley Smith. The entrance to Broome-Kirk Gymnasium, built 1955, can be seen in the background.
