Description
This image shows two women standing behind boards and being pelted with pies at the pie throwing contest during the May Day Festival on Sanford Mall at Appalachian State University (1967-current) on May 8, 1971. The pie throwing contest was sponsored by the Golden Capers. Other students and Sanford Hall, built 1969, can be seen in the background. The May Day Play Day in 1971 was organized with a New Orleans Bourbon Street theme, and included jazz music, booths, games, a coin-toss, an ice cream parlor, sideshows, body painting, pea shooting, the Appalette's egg combat booth, and the Golden Capers' pie throwing contest.
