This image shows students attending the May Day Play Day, the annual May Day festival held at Sanford Mall at Appalachian State University (1967-current) on May 8, 1971. Students can be seen standing on Sanford Mall in front of Welborn Cafeteria, built 1925. An archway reading "Bourbon St" can be seen in the foreground. The May Day Play Day in 1971 was organized with a New Orleans Bourbon Street theme, and included jazz music, booths, games, a coin-toss, an ice cream parlor, sideshows, body painting, pea shooting, the Appalette's egg combat booth, and the Golden Capers' pie throwing contest.
