Title
Military Science Tour, photo 4
Description
This image shows Chairman William Palmer giving a tour of the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) to a group of elementary school students in the 1970s. Two other faculty members can be seen in uniform on the right. Rifles can be seen in gun racks in the background. The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) began in the fall of 1969 and is housed in the Department of Military Science in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. It offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
