Description

This image shows a ROTC student in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) laying on the ground aiming a rifle at targets on a gun range in the 1970s. The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) began in the fall of 1969 and is housed in the Department of Military Science in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. It offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
