Title

Military Science, basic training, photo 1

Description

This image shows a student swimming in a pool while holding a weapon above his head during a basic training course in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in 1986-87. The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) began in the fall of 1969 and is housed in the Department of Military Science in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. It offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard. This image appears in the 1987 Rhododendron (p. 395).
