Military Science Faculty, 1986, photo 2

This image shows the faculty of the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in 1986-87. The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) began in the fall of 1969 and is housed in the Department of Military Science in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. It offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard. This image appears in the 1987 Rhododendron (p. 165). Seated on the far left is MAJ Larry Hensel. Seated in the middle is LTC Charles Michael, Chairperson of the Department of Military Science. Standing from the left are unknown, SGM Peter Lynch and SSG Terry Swarmer. Standing from the right are unknown, unknown and SGM Donald Shambling.
