Description
This image shows students and faculty attendees of a foreign language institute sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages at Appalachian State University (1967-current) during the summer in the 1960s. Programs in the Department of Foreign Languages focus on teaching students both the language and culture of a region, and includes courses in French, Spanish, Chinese, German, Arabic, Japanese, Latin, and Russian, as well as offering classes for international business and economics majors in the College of Business. The Language Lab had 54 booths with electronic attachments, where students listened to prerecorded tapes designed to enhance the student's ability to comprehend, pronounce, and speak the language. In the first row on the far right is seen Dr. J. Roy Prince, Chairperson of the Department of Foreign Languages.
