Title

Land of Oz, Beech Mountain, photo 1

Description

This image shows two people riding on one of the balloon lifts at the Land of Oz theme park on Beech Mountain in northwestern North Carolina in the 1970s. Two people can be seen in the basket of a hot air balloon, attached to a cable above the park, partially visible on the right. The Land of Oz was a Wizard of Oz theme park that operated between 1970 and 1980. It included character houses, a yellow brick road, and a balloon lift. The park closed in 1980 and left vacant until being purchased in 1990 by Emerald Mountain Development. Now primarily rental property, every year an Autumn at Oz festival is held for the public, including music, hay rides, exhibits, and performances.
