Appalachian House, opening, photo 1

Description

This image shows four attendees of the opening of the Appalachian House by Appalachian State University (1967-current) in Washington, D.C., in 1977. The Appalachian House opened in 1977 and served as a hostel for 18-20 visiting faculty, staff, and students. It was replaced by a property six blocks away on North Carolina Avenue in 2003 but closed in April 2008, when zoning restrictions would no longer allow the house to be used as a hostel. Standing from left to right are Dr. Roger Stilling, Professor in the Department of English; Dr. Richard Rupp, Dean of the Graduate School; Dr. Ron Tuttle, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School and Dr. Joan Terry, Chairperson of the Department of Home Economics.
