Title

Steam Plant, circa 1973

Description

This image shows the New River Light and Power Company Steam Generator Plant, built 1924, at Appalachian State University (1967-current) boarded up in the late 1970s. New River Light and Power was started two miles south of Appalachian Training School (1903-1925) on the Edminsten Farm in 1915, supplying power generated from the New River to the School and six individual customers in Boone, NC. When New River ceased generating its own power, Appalachian State renovated the building to generate steam heat for the campus. The original building included a smokestack that was taken down in May 1973.
