This image shows William Friday, member of the Board of Governors and president of the University of North Carolina System shaking hands with Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. The Board of Governors is the main governing body of the sixteen University of North Carolina institutions, and elects each of the institutions' chancellors, vice chancellors, senior academic and administrative officers, and faculty with permanent tenure.
