Description
This image shows a group of students working to assemble a telescope in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1960s. Two students are seen looking at books on homebuilt telescopes, while a third is holding a lens. A fourth student can be seen pressing something onto a pile of newspapers. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is in the College of Arts and Sciences and maintains the Rankin Science Observatory in Rankin Science Hall, built 1963, and the Dark Sky Observatory, opened 1981, twenty miles northeast of Boone, NC. The Department offers an undergraduate degrees in applied physics and graduate degrees in engineering physics, as well as courses in industrial, chemical, computational, environmental, medical, and radiation safety physics. as well as courses in industrial, chemical, computational, environmental, medical, and radiation safety physics.
