Title

Military Science, camp, photo 2

Description

This image shows the firing range of a U. S. Army installation used for the advanced ROTC summer camp by the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. Students are standing in the background on the right, while the instructor stands on the left, and a student stands on the right holding a rifle, preparing to shoot. Another student is partially seen standing behind the instructor. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
