Military Science, camp, photo 4

This image shows three students rappelling down the side of a mountain at a U. S. Army installation used for the advanced ROTC summer camp by the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. One student is seen descending down the mountain, while two others are standing at the base. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
