This image shows a cadet standing with his right hand raised while taking a loyalty oath during a commissioning ceremony in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. Another officer is standing on the left. The cadet had completed the advanced ROTC program and were being commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
