Military Science, ceremony, photo 1

Description

This image shows students in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) marching in full dress uniform around the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968, in the late 1970s for an end of year awards ceremony. The Golden Capers female auxilary to the Cadet Corps leads the group. Department faculty and audience members can be seen standing on the left. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
