This image shows two cadets in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) raising the American flag in front of the B. B. Dougherty Administration Building, built 1968, in the late 1970s. A cadet can be seen playing the trumpet in the foreground. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
