Military Science, commission ceremony, 1976, photo 2

This image shows a group of cadets in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in uniforms standing with their right hands raised in spring of 1976. The cadets were being commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army after completing the ROTC program. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
