This image shows the descendants of Appalachian State founders B. B. Dougherty and D. D. Dougherty in the D. D. Dougherty Library, built 1935, at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1960s. Annie Doughterty Rufty, left, and Grace Dougherty, right, were donating a copy of O. L. Brown's biography of Appalachian State founder and President Emeritus B. B. Dougherty to the Appalachian Collection. Oscar Lester Brown wrote "Blanford Barnard Dougherty, a man to match his mountains" in 1963. He was a graduate of Appalachian Training School (1903-1925) and son-in-law of B. B. Dougherty. The W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection is a repository for materials related to the Southern uplands, with strengths in the social sciences, regional history, folklore, music, religion, genealogy, fiction, and African and Native Appalachia. Ruby Lanier, Professor of History is sitting in the middle.
