This image shows two students and Professor Fred Webb of the Department of Geology at Appalachian State University (1967-current) standing outside Rankin Science Hall, built 1963, watching as a student examines something with an portable microscope in the 1970s. Framed pictures of buildings are lining the walls in the background. The Department of Geology began in 1949. It emphasizes the scientific principles of geology and preparing students to be professional geologists and teachers. It is the only Bachelor of Science program that results in an Earth Science Teaching certification in North Carolina.
