Description

This image shows the recipients of the A. R. Smith Chemistry Awards in September 1978 posing outside in front of Rankin Science Hall, built 1963-1970, at Appalachian State University (1967-current). A. R. Smith, former chemistry professor at Appalachian State since 1921 until 1959-1960, is seen standing third from the right. The Department of Chemistry exists within the College of Arts and Sciences, and aims to provide training for future chemists, basic understanding of the principles of chemistry, and chemistry teachers. The Department has been accredited by the American Chemical Society. The A. R. Smith Scholarships are awarded to chemistry majors at Appalachian State. Second from the right is Dr Steven Breiner, Assistant Professor of Chemistry.
