This image shows the recipients of the A. R. Smith Chemistry Awards sitting at a table eating in September 1977 at Appalachian State University (1967-current). A. R. Smith, former chemistry professor at Appalachian State since 1921 until 1959-1960, is seen sitting on the right. The Department of Chemistry exists within the College of Arts and Sciences, and aims to provide training for future chemists, basic understanding of the principles of chemistry, and chemistry teachers. The Department has been accredited by the American Chemical Society. The A. R. Smith Scholarships are awarded to chemistry majors at Appalachian State. Seated third on the right is Dr. George Miles, Professor of Chemistry.
